Course Introduction

Workshop Management and Planning

Workshop Management and Planning is a practical and competency-based course designed to equip trainees with essential knowledge and hands-on skills required to organize, control, and maintain an efficient workshop environment. The course focuses on proper planning of resources, enforcing safety standards, coordinating workflow, supervising personnel, and ensuring effective use of tools, equipment, and materials.

Learners will explore key principles of workshop layout, scheduling, inventory management, hazard identification, record-keeping, and maintenance planning. Through demonstrations, simulations, case studies, and practical exercises, trainees will be exposed to real-world workshop situations that encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Upon completion, trainees should be able to confidently apply workshop management and planning principles to promote productivity, safety, quality workmanship, and continuous improvement in their workplace.


Learning Expectations

By the end of the course, a trainee is expected to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of workshop organization including layout, workflow, and safety requirements.

  2. Plan and schedule workshop activities using standard procedures and available resources.

  3. Identify and assess workplace hazards and propose appropriate control measures.

  4. Maintain workshop inventory, including tools, equipment, and materials.

  5. Develop and implement a preventive maintenance plan for workshop machines and equipment.

  6. Keep accurate workshop records such as job cards, inspection reports, requisitions, and maintenance logs.

  7. Apply effective communication and supervision skills in coordinating workshop teams.

  8. Demonstrate professionalism, safety consciousness, and responsibility during all workshop tasks.


Grading / Assessment Criteria

Learners will be assessed through both theory and practical work as follows:

1. Continuous Assessment (CATs) – 40%

  • Written tests / quizzes – 15%

  • Assignments and research tasks – 10%

  • Practical exercises and demonstrations – 15%

2. Final Examination – 60%

  • Theory exam – 30%

  • Practical exam – 30%
